Legend has it this settlement was founded by people fleeing the plague during the late
17th Century and this is consistent with the age of many of its thatched cottages.
Originally built on rising ground to the east, it now also occupies the valley
bottom. The houses and fields
rise steeply to the east before coming to the boundary of Ridges Copse where the land reaches the
130m level and from here
there are magnificent views
over Andover to the
range of hills including the Danebury Ring.
Its dwellings range from flint and brick thatched dwellings, to post World War II council
houses and more modern developments.
